In 1980 I was asked by one of the many clients I did voice over radio commercials for, Brandee & Wine For Men Clothiers on Broadway if I would be interested in going on camera as their TV spokesman. Naturally I jumped at the opportunity to get into television and the rest as they say is history.
Doors opened immediately and I soon found myself spending as much time in the TV studios of BCTV and VU13 making on camera spots as I was in the radio studio at CFMI. Realizing that I was now a freelance commercial actor I knew I needed to find a damn good agent willing to represent me and handle all negotiations, something I detested.
Today Jamie Levitt owns the very successful Vancouver talent agency Lauren Levitt and Associates and remembers the day I became her very first actor/narrator client.
Once Jamies agency was ramped up she started submitting my headshot and resume to casting directors, the auditions, television series work and film rolls started appearing, slowly at first but by the late 80s I was far busier with my freelance career than I was with my radio career.
I think what I enjoyed most about film and TV acting was the craft service table and actually meeting and talking to major stars on set, a privilege not offered to many. My best memories were doing dialogue with Sir Anthony Hopkins and Australian Model/actress Elle Macpherson in The Edge. I also had the rare honor to work alongside Angelina Joli in Life or Something Like It; Morgan Freeman in Along Came A Spider and Jim Varney in Slam Dunk Ernest.
